Google Pixel Watch 5: AI and health upgrades

Alongside its new smartphones, Google has also unveiled the Pixel Watch 5. At a glance, it may look like it hasn’t changed much from its predecessor but this is not quite another small annual refresh. Instead, Google has stuffed more Gemini features into the watch, improved its GPS tracking and introduced several health features that are seemingly more ambitious than previous models.

A big part of this is making the watch more useful without forcing you to stop and search for something yourself. At a Glance can now place information on the watch face when Google thinks you may need it, such as bringing up a boarding pass when you reach the airport or showing how many stops are left during your commute. Raise to Talk has also been improved, so you can lift your wrist and ask Gemini to start a workout or find a dinner reservation that has been buried in Gmail. Google says common actions are now processed directly on the watch with less delay and can even work offline.

Gemini Intelligence Proactive Suggestions takes this idea a little further. If someone asks when the next family dinner is, the watch can search your calendar and surface the relevant event without making you dig through your phone. You can then use a double-pinch gesture to select, confirm or send a response. Whether you will want Gemini deciding what should appear on your wrist throughout the day is another matter, but it is a more interesting use of smartwatch AI than simply shrinking a chatbot down to a smaller screen.
