Months after introducing a screenless fitness tracker, Google has unveiled its next-generation wearable, the Fitbit Edge. The new device takes a different approach, combining the convenience of a fitness band with features typically found on a smartwatch.
The Fitbit Edge features a Hybrid OLED display, which Google describes as the largest and brightest screen it has put on a fitness tracker. The display offers 46% more viewing area than previous trackers, with content designed to remain readable even in direct sunlight.
Despite its larger display, the Fitbit Edge has an 11.5mm-thin aluminium case and weighs 45% less than the Apple Watch Series 12, according to Google. It is also water-resistant to 50m, making it suitable for swimming and other water-based activities.
One of the Fitbit Edge’s more notable features is its repairability. Google says it is the company’s first repairable fitness tracker, thanks to an internal modular architecture and a replaceable battery. This could make the device easier to maintain over time, potentially extending its useful lifespan instead of requiring users to replace the entire tracker when the battery deteriorates.
