6 Years Later, The Expanse Is Officially Returning

Science fiction hit The Expanse has already been revived once. When Syfy canceled it in 2018 after three seasons, Prime Video picked it up and carried it through its sixth and final season. Now the show, based on the best-selling book series written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, is being revived again — this time as a video game.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, slated for release in spring 2027, has long been anticipated by fans of the franchise. The game was first announced at the 2025 Future Games Expo by developer Owlcat Games, which has previously worked on titles such as Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and Pathfinder: Kingmaker. It was recently featured prominently at this summer’s Gamescom, which offered a first look at a new trailer and a hands-on preview for attendees.

Osiris Reborn takes place concurrently with seasons 1 through 3 of the TV series (or between the novels Leviathan Wakes and Caliban’s War), and follows the interplanetary politics of a solar system on the brink of war. Not to worry — you don’t need prior knowledge of the plot to enjoy the game. Though familiar faces like Captain James Holden (complete with the likeness of Steven Strait) do appear, most characters — including your own customizable mercenary — witness events in real-time as they unfold throughout the game.

According to a studio video, Owlcat Games worked closely with former NASA astronaut and International Space Station commander Leroy Chiao to make the space elements of the game as realistic as possible. For example, the game incorporates magnetic boots that anchor characters to a ship’s surface, enabling controlled movement in zero gravity. “We hope that our approach to blending realism with gameplay considerations will make players experience something engaging and truly immersive,” said Yuliya Chernenko, game design producer for Osiris Reborn.

In a hands-on early preview of the game, Polygon’s Ari Notis wrote that, “In this, the devs behind Osiris Reborn understand the essence of The Expanse, which has always been more concerned with the politics of how humans end up fighting each other rather than the fight itself. Despite how violent the series and books can get, its characters often strive to solve conflicts without violence. And in Osiris Reborn, the nonlethal approach results in a Hitman-like level of immersive sim.”

In other words, your decisions matter just as much as your aim in Osiris Reborn. To explore The Expanse early, you can gain beta access by purchasing either the Miller’s Pack ($79.99) or the Collector’s Edition ($289) on the game’s website. The beta will be available until the game’s official launch.
