Razer brings back its Mako desktop speaker lineup, with a refreshed design to boot

As for the Mako, it also connects via USB, but its power output gets an upgrade to 40W RMS and 60W peak power. It’s also a 2.1ch speaker, coming with a dedicated 3.5-inch front-facing subwoofer rather than the passive radiators. Hence, the frequency response for the subs is a little bit better here, as low as 45Hz. The size of the full-range drivers on the Mako proper are kept at 2.75-inches.

Like the Mako X, it also supports virtual 7.1 surround sound, as well as Bluetooth, USB and 3.5mm inputs.

It should be noted that for both the Mako and Mako X, the peak power output is only achievable if you have a compatible power source. For instance, connecting a pair of Mako speakers to only your laptop may not achieve the same loudness as if you had a dedicated PD-enabled power adapter connected. Razer recommends plugging in a 45W or higher power adapter to get the most out of the Makos.

As with most Razer products, the Mako and Mako X support Razer Chroma. The RGB LEDs on the Mako are able to convey 16.8 million colours, but the Mako X sees a bit of a downgrade in this department, with only 10-zone LEDs built in.

Where have I seen this before?

Overall, it looks like a fairly competent speaker system with the potential to get quite loud, though we’re not entirely sure if it’s worth it just yet without hearing it. That’s especially true as there’s another set of speakers, made by another Singaporean company, that shares a very similar shape.

To clear the air, the Makos are a bit behind the curve when it comes to design; they look pretty similar Creative’s Pebble speakers, which have been a mainstay of the company for about 8 years now.

That’s not to say the Makos are a complete rehash of the Pebbles, as there are a few differences between the two lineups. Namely, the Makos support virtual 7.1 audio, whereas none of the existing Pebble speakers do.

The angle at which the speakers face is also slightly, if negligibly, different – the Makos are angled at 40°, while the Pebble speakers are angled at 45°.

The lower-end Mako X also has passive radiators built-in, while the comparable Creative Pebble X does not. It’s worth noting that the Pebble X Plus does have passive radiators, though it being a 2.1-channel setup puts it more on the level of the higher-end Mako.

Beyond these spec-for-spec comparisons, though, the only way to truly know the difference between the Mako speakers and the Pebbles are to listen to them and compare, which isn’t possible right now as the Makos aren’t out yet.

Nonetheless, considering the popularity of the Pebble line, it does seem as if the Mako speakers are directly competing with them. But whether deliberate or not, the similar design does mean it takes some of the flaws of Creative’s Pebble lineup.

This includes the lack of a tweeter to handle highs, like Edifier’s M60 desktop speakers. Razer also emphasised the compact shape of the Mako speakers – it’s an intentional choice as the company wants the footprint of the Mako speakers to be as small as possible, but it’s potentially the reason the Mako X and Mako are capped at 45W and 60W peak output respectively. The Mako speakers also miss out on other connection methods such as optical, coaxial and line input.

Pricing and Availability

The Razer Mako X will become available on 6 October 2026 on Razer’s website, RazerStores as well as authorised retailers, while the Mako will only be available in December 2026 (you can be notified when it released here). We don’t know the Singapore pricing yet, but we do know its US pricing. The Mako X will cost US$99.99 (~S$128), while the Mako will cost US$149 (~$192). – as far as Razer products go, these prices actually aren’t too exorbitant.
