It’s an exciting year for Samsung foldable phones, mostly because it has introduced a new model with a wider form factor. This naturally raises some problems with regards to nomenclature. What do you call this year’s devices?

The new wider foldable is now known as the Galaxy Z Fold8, while to distinguish the book-style folder that has always been in the lineup, Samsung has naturally called it the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. Yup, the successor to last year’s Z Fold7 is the Z Fold 8 Ultra.

At this point, you are probably wondering what the difference is between the two. Very broadly, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is more compact thanks to its smaller displays and wider form factor. It also makes do with just two rear cameras, while the Z Fold8 Ultra has three. To find out more, check out our Galaxy Z Fold8 coverage here.

Now on to what’s new in the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.

What’s new?

The physical dimensions are unchanged. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra remains remarkably slim for a foldable phone.

The basic ingredients of the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra are mostly the same. The cover screen is 6.5 inches and retains its 21:9 aspect ratio. It’s the same AMOLED display as last year’s model, with a resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

The main display has been improved. It’s still 8 inches in size, and it still uses an AMOLED panel, but the resolution has been bumped up slightly to 2504 x 2256 pixels. This means its pixel density count now matches the cover display. The aspect ratio is still 10:9, and it has a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

The star of the Z Fold8 Ultra has to be its rear triple camera system. The main 200-megapixel wide camera is unchanged, but it now has an improved 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera that Samsung says delivers better detail and clarity. If you recall, last year’s model had a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The 10-megapixel telephoto camera is unchanged.

There are also significant improvements internally. To start, the Z Fold8 Ultra gets the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip. It also has a larger 5,000mAh battery (up from 4,400mAh). Charging speeds have also been improved with support now for 45W wired charging (up from 25W) and 20W wireless charging (up from 15W). Samsung says a 30-minute charge will get the Z Fold8 Ultra from 0% to 67% charge.

The physical dimensions are largely identical. When folded, the Z Fold8 Ultra measures just 8.9mm thick, and it’s just4.1mm thick when unfolded. Weight is the same at 215g. The Z Fold8 Ultra comes in four colours: Graphite, Cream, Violet Shadow, and Green Shadow. To note, Green Shadow is a Samsung.com exclusive.

With its larger display and triple rear camera system, there’s no question that the Z Fold8 Ultra is the flagship device ofSamsung’s foldable lineup. Last year’s Z Fold7 was an awesome phone, and so it’s not surprising to see that Samsung hasn’t changed things up too drastically and instead decided on incremental improvements. The higher resolution main display is a nice touch, as is the larger battery, and I’m sure the improved ultra-wide camera will come in handy when taking photos in tight situations or when travelling.

All things considered, it looks like Samsung could have another foldable winner on its hands.
