Sony RX10 V: The ultimate hobbyist bridge camera

Sony just announced the Sony RX10 V, the fifth-generation model of Sony’s iconic RX10 series.

This bridge camera uses a 1-inch-type sensor in its body with an integrated lens, offering a 24mm to 600mm zoom range across f/2.4 to f/4.0 apertures. Its entire package is designed to be easy for prosumers or hobbyists dabbling in serious digital photography, offering perks like optical zoom, professional controls, and all-around shooting without having to spend too much on lenses or upgrades.

The integrated lens is a ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T*, and its image sensor is a 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS with 20.1MP effective resolution. Video shooting goes up to 4K120FPS, and it’s further supported by a 0.5-inch OLED viewfinder (1,280 x 960 pixels, Quad VGA resolution) and a 3-inch LCD monitor.

Where Sony makes the RX10 V similar to its pro-grade Alpha mirrorless cameras is by sharing the same button layout and grip design, translating professional-grade controls onto a hobbyist camera.

Sony also said its Z-series rechargeable battery (for the RX10 V) can squeeze in up to 630 still shots in a single charge, which is 50% more than previous models. However, that upper limit assumes you are shooting using the LCD monitor. With the OLED viewfinder, it tops off at 570 shots.

For data transfers, it supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, as well as up to 4K30 FPS livestreaming. You can also pair the camera with Sony’s Creators’ App and transfer your shots immediately to a smartphone or cloud storage.

All-range macro shooting, AI-powered AutoFocus, and other goodies

There’s many little details that make the RX10 V a true all-rounder. It also offers macro shooting across the entire zoom range on its integrated lens (3cm focusing distance at 24mm, 72cm distance at 600mm).

Its all-rounded purpose also covers modern video needs, like livestreaming and vlogging.

A bulk of its processing for noise, colourisation, and detail sensitivity relies on its BIONZ XR image processing engine. However, you can still employ its 12 built-in Creative Look presets or create one yourself.

The Dynamic Range Optimiser function, also called DRO, which lets you manipulate image contrast to mimic what’s seen with the human eye, goes up to level 8, making it more granular than its previous five levels of control.

AutoFocus is powered by an AI processing unit that recognises not just people, planes, and pets, but also subjects’ poses. It can tell whether the person has their back turned to the camera or is wearing glasses or a helmet. To lock focus, simply tap the display, and the RX10 V engages Real-Time Tracking. AF and AE tracking calculates at 60 times per second.

For 4K120FPS recording folks, it has 5x slow-motion playback, and a multi-interface shoe (MI shoe) that supports digital audio interfaces.
