Food items seen stored in Sengkang bin centre and utility room, town council says it’s for community distribution

A Sengkang resident raised hygiene concerns after spotting food items being stored inside a bin centre and utility room near Block 303 Anchorvale Link.

Stomper Steven said he first noticed the issue on May 25, when he saw “a lot of food items inside the utility centre and centralised bin compound”.

“It didn’t look hygienic,” he said.

“I lodged a report to OneService and Sengkang Town Council (SKTC) replied that the food distribution had been completed and the area had been cleaned.

“But when I checked again recently, I still saw food items on the floor, mixed with rubbish and unused materials.”

Steven added that when he asked a worker and a lorry driver about the items, they told him the food belonged to the town council and was stored there temporarily before being delivered elsewhere.

“I’m doubtful whether the food is from a legal supply and if it’s hygienic for human consumption,” he said.

In response to a Stomp query, SKTC clarified that the utility room is used for short-term storage of perishable goods.

“We confirm that our utility room is used for short-term storage of vegetables and other perishables, which are then distributed during the weekly food rescue at the nearby Block 304C,” a town council spokesperson said.

“The distribution is a community event that the town council supports, with the beneficiaries being Sengkang residents.”
