Renders and specs of Samsung Galaxy XR headset revealed

Renders and specifications of Samsung’s upcoming mixed reality headset, reportedly developed in collaboration with Google, have been revealed.

Display specs

According to the leaked renders, the Samsung Galaxy XR sports a front glass panel that resembles the design of the Apple Vision Pro. It features dual 4K micro-OLED display panels delivering a combined resolution of 29 million pixels – that’s higher than the 23 million pixels of the Apple Vision Pro.

Processor

Under the hood is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform. Announced in January 2024, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is stated to deliver “spectacularly clear visuals”.

User Interface

Likely a customised version of Google’s Android XR, the Samsung One UI XR will be the interface of the Galaxy XR. Seen in the photo above are popular apps including Chrome, Netflix, Photos, and Play Store.

Sensors

Six sensors are positioned on the front glass panel – at the top, bottom, and beside the nose cutout – to track hand movements and gestures. An additional proximity sensor near the forehead helps detect walls, floors, ceilings, and the surrounding environment.

Inside, the Galaxy XR has four eye-tracking cameras equipped with infrared LEDs and AI support. It also has microphones capable of capturing sound from different directions and distinguishing individual speech patterns.

Weight and battery life

Compared to the chunky Vision Pro, the Galaxy XR is lighter at 545g. While the battery capacity of the headset is not specified, the Galaxy XR is believed to last up to 2.5 hours of video playback and 2 hours of general use. An external battery pack can be attached to the Galaxy XR to extend its battery life.

Galaxy XR controllers

Like other VR controllers, they are said to be able to track hand movements accurately in a 3D environment and support haptic feedback.

Rumoured launch date, availability and pricing

ETNews recently reported that the Galaxy XR might be unveiled at an online event on 22 October. Samsung is said to be preparing an initial production run of 100,000 units for launch, with an estimated retail price of around S$2,700.
