Experiencing freezing or unexpected reboots on your iPhone 18 Pro when trying to unlock it with Face ID? A fix is on the way.
Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that it is working on a software update to address the issue, with the release expected early next week.
Several iPhone 18 Pro owners have reported on social media that their devices become unresponsive or freeze after a failed Face ID authentication attempt. In some cases, the phone reportedly stops responding to touch input before eventually rebooting.
Deputy Editor’s note: I’ve experienced a related issue with my iPhone 18 Pro Max review unit. The phone would reboot itself whenever I tried to use Apple Pay with a specific card in my wallet. The screen would go blank immediately after the Face ID animation, and the phone would reset itself. This happened to me thrice. I’ve attempted to fix this by removing and re-adding the card. And so far, the issue hasn’t resurfaced.
Although Apple didn’t explain what is causing the issue, it does not appear to be related to Apple’s new under-display Face ID system, which moves the Face ID components beneath the screen. If you’ve experienced this issue, rest assured that it is not a hardware issue.
