Review | 54 horses dazzle at Cavalluna’s Hong Kong debut, despite cliché story


But Cavalluna – Gate to the Otherworld, an equestrian spectacle from Europe that combines high-level horsemanship, dance, acrobatics and theatre, takes equestrian experience and entertainment to another level.

The production, which is presented by the Hong Kong Jockey Club and runs until September 13 at Kai Tak Arena, features 54 horses of various breeds, sizes and colours. They are cast as characters in a fantastical tale about the sorceress Meerin and her journey from losing her magical powers to rediscovering faith in herself.

But Cavalluna – a name derived from caballo and luna, the Spanish words for horse and moon – is far more than a simple display of beautiful horses. The evening at the arena featured both breathtaking and thrilling moments that highlighted the riders’ skills and their extraordinary partnership with the animals.
