LEGO UCS Super Star Destroyer: Darth Vader’s flagship reimagined

LEGO is “remaking” one of its more popular Star Wars sets in the new Ultimate Collector Series Executor Super Star Destroyer, and the 15-year wait appears to have been worthwhile.

The original Super Star Destroyer 10221, released in 2011, was already enormous. It measured 124.5cm long and came with 3,152 LEGO pieces, making it one of LEGO’s more ambitious display models at the time. But age has not been particularly kind to its design. Its unusually narrow body, exposed studs and relatively sparse central section now look somewhat rudimentary beside more recent UCS sets.

The new Executor Super Star Destroyer 75457 feels less like a straightforward remake and more like LEGO finally giving Darth Vader’s flagship the MOC (My Own Creation) treatment it deserves. Its piece count has nearly doubled to 6,130, while the completed ship now measures 136cm long, 50cm wide and 20cm tall. It is officially the longest brick-built LEGO Star Wars model to date and weighs more than 5kg.

More importantly, the extra bricks have gone towards fixing the original’s awkward proportions. The new Executor has a broader, sharper hull that comes much closer to the ship’s appearance in The Empire Strikes Back. Its central spine is also considerably denser, with layered mechanical detailing, tiled hull lights and building techniques that expose both the stud and tube sides of bricks. A LEGO System core and Technic outriggers hold the large outer panels in place, similar to the Imperial Star Destroyer 75252 and Venator-class Republic Attack Cruiser 75367 sets.

There’s also a smaller Star Destroyer for scale, although LEGO has now added an amusingly tiny one-stud Millennium Falcon as well. There is also a separate miniature build of the Executor’s bridge, accompanied by Darth Vader and all six bounty hunters from the film: Boba Fett, Bossk, Dengar, IG-88, 4-LOM and Zuckuss. Admiral Piett, who appeared in the 2011 set, is unfortunately absent.

The LEGO Star Wars Executor Super Star Destroyer has an SRP of S$1,069.90 and will be available in Singapore from 4 October, with LEGO Insiders receiving early access from 1 October.
