Magic just revealed 25 wild cards in Mystery Booster Commander

Deep cuts and long-awaited nostalgia

Rather than pulling from recent story arcs, Mystery Booster: Commander Edition asks players to dust off binders full of cards that haven’t had a home in years. It’s a nostalgia-driven design philosophy that actively rewards legacy players with creatures like Davvol, Evincar of Rath, whose birthday is finally being remembered with his own card. Fans of late-1990s Magic lore will immediately recognize this obscure villain, who was first introduced in flavor text on Carnival of Souls from the 1999 expansion Urza’s Destiny, the release date of which became Davvol’s unofficial birthday.

Despite having a relatively simple ability tied to life loss, Davvol is an absolute monster for Golgari (black and green) go-wide strategies or aristocrats decks. Every creature you play dings you for one life, but you get a floating black mana for your sacrifice, evoking the same ability printed on the card that introduced him to the game nearly 25 years ago. As long as you have the consistent life gain to offset his penalty, he creates a mountain of value — made even better if you happen to have Carnival of Souls along with it.

Another cheer from the community easily goes to Nephilim Epochal. For two decades, players have had to use “rule zero” pre-game conversations to legally run the original four-color Nephilim cycle as Commanders. Wizards finally printed an official legend for the archetype that not only helms the deck but actively tutors up and buffs your Nephilim. Since there are only five original creature cards with the sub-type in the entire game, you’ll have to lean heavily into Changelings, but it’s a massive victory for players who have kept this niche dream alive since Guildpact.

Frankenstein tribes and overhauled archetypes

Typal decks are one of Commander’s most beloved strategies, from elves and dragons to rats and Slivers, but Mystery Booster: Commander Edition refuses to leave traditional tribal design alone. Instead of giving established creature types basic “+1/+1 and draw a card” Commander options, Wizards is smashing unexpected archetypes together and rewriting how typal deckbuilding works.

Look at Olag and Miau, New Friends, a legendary creature that forces two completely disparate creature types (cats and zombies) into an unlikely alliance. It’s unclear who was asking for a cat-zombie mashup, but the resulting engine is quite terrifying. Whenever your feline and undead armies enter the battlefield (even as tokens), they buff each other and set off large chunks of direct life loss. Pair them with token doublers or tap-enablers like Doubling Season and Cryptolith Rite, and it creates a lethal, fast-moving clock for the entire table.

On the flip side, Seluma, Light of Aysen takes one of Magic’s most popular creature types and blows its color restrictions wide open using the new Rulebreaker mechanic. Seluma bypasses standard deck construction rules to let you run any Angel in Magic history, instantly making it a candidate for the premier best-in-slot commander for Angel decks. As if universal inclusion wasn’t enough, Seluma also reanimates any Angel directly to the battlefield regardless of mana cost. It’s an insane payoff that takes high-cost, multi-color angels that previously struggled to find a unified home, like Bruna, Light of Alabaster; Sigarda, Host of Herons; or Maelstrom Archangel, and places them under one overwhelmingly powerful banner.

Unhinged Table Politics and Weird Puzzles

Mystery Booster products have always embraced unexpected interactions through playtest cards, and this set translates that philosophy into multiplayer politics and bizarre deckbuilding restrictions.

Zagorka, Mother of Sanctum is a masterclass in psychological warfare. On the surface, this Temur (green, blue, red) group hug Commander looks like an actively bad card that just ramps your opponents’ boards by giving them the option to create a land. But there’s a catch: Zagorka actively stops attacking you if you take the land. It’s a brilliant political tool designed to lull the rest of the table into a false sense of security while you build an insurmountable board state in peace.

Then you have absolute anomalies like The Unluckiest Planeswalker. Magic‘s legendary “Curse Guy” has finally sparked, and the result is a three-mana mono red powerhouse. The card functions as an aura commander, completely ignoring color identity restrictions for auras, allowing you to run whatever enhancements and basic lands you want. Add in the fact that it ramps, refills your hand, and generates 1/1 goblins to protect itself, and you have a commander that feels like a perfect fit alongside cards from Magic’s latest The Hobbit set.

Many of these legends wouldn’t survive a Standard design process. The rules gymnastics required to make them function would warp a normal limited draft environment beyond repair. But that’s precisely why they fit so naturally into Mystery Booster: Commander Edition, as it’s a product built purely for the love of the game’s strangest corners.
