Samsung recently announced new foldable phones at its Galaxy Unpacked event in London. It now has two book-style foldable phones. The Z Fold8 Ultra is the successor to last year’s Z Fold7, while the Z Fold8 is more compact and features a new wider form factor.
The Z Fold8 is certainly the more interesting of the two, not only because it has a new form factor – when unfolded it has a wider display with a 4:3 aspect ratio – but also because Apple’s rumoured upcoming foldable phone is also expected to adopt a similar form factor.
By launching the Z Fold8 first, Samsung removes the risk that Apple’s foldable phone turns out to be great and it has nothing comparable to offer. Furthermore, the move to call the larger foldable phone the Z Fold8 Ultra is particularly clever.
