Apple’s rumoured foldable iPhone could use OCA tech for a crease-free display

Apple’s answer to the visible crease in today’s foldable phones may lie in optically clear adhesive (OCA) technology.

According to market research firm TrendForce, OCA could be the breakthrough technology for foldable displays this year. Traditionally used as a bonding layer, advances in OCA now allow it to play a more active structural role. Through optimised material composition and modulus design, OCA can deliver enhanced viscoelastic properties to help the display better withstand repeated folding.

In practical terms, what this means is the foldable panel can remain flexible during gradual bends to reduce fatigue stress, while still providing localised support when exposed to sudden pressure. OCA’s micro-flow behaviour also allows it to fill microscopic irregularities that develop over time, reduce light scattering, and further minimise the appearance of a crease.
