Foldable iPhone: Apple’s biggest design overhaul

Beyond hardware, the foldable iPhone could also trigger Apple’s most drastic software evolution yet. iOS 27 is reportedly being optimised specifically for the new form factor, with an iPad-like interface that supports running two apps side by side. While such multitasking has long been standard on Android foldables, it would mark a first for any iPhone, which has so far been limited to single-app usage on screen.

That said, the foldable iPhone is not expected to run iPadOS. This means it won’t fully replicate the iPad’s multitasking capabilities or support its app ecosystem. Instead, Apple is likely to strike a balance – bringing select productivity features to iOS without blurring the lines between its mobile and tablet platforms. With WWDC 2026 kicking off on 8 June, more details on iOS 27 and Apple’s broader software direction could arrive sooner rather than later.

In terms of hardware, the device is rumoured to feature a 5.5-inch cover display that functions much like a standard iPhone when folded. Unfolded, it expands to a screen roughly the size of an iPad mini, with reports pointing to a 7.8-inch main foldable display. Additional features could include a Touch ID power button and Apple’s in-house C2 modem.

A recent analyst report suggests Apple may target a December launch window for the foldable iPhone. When it arrives, its cost could potentially exceed S$3,000. Given its high price, it would likely be positioned as a flagship showcase of Apple’s next-generation design and engineering ambitions.
