Apple’s iPhone 17e brings MagSafe and A19 performance to S$949 price point

After weeks of rumours, Apple has finally confirmed and announced the iPhone 17e, the most accessible entry into the iPhone 17 family. Locally, the smartphone starts at S$949 for 256GB of storage, which is double the base storage of its predecessor at the same starting price.

Pre-orders begin on 4 March, with availability from 11 March. The phone comes in three finishes – black, white and a new soft pink – all with a matte texture.

A19 processor and C1X modem

At the core of the iPhone 17e is Apple’s latest A19 chip, built on a 3nm process. We have covered the A19’s performance extensively (read about it here) before, and Apple says the 6-core CPU here is up to twice as fast as the chip found in the iPhone 11, while the 4-core GPU adds hardware-accelerated ray tracing for more demanding games. The upgraded 16-core Neural Engine is also tuned for generative AI workloads, enabling Apple Intelligence features in iOS 26 to run directly on device.

The iPhone 17e also comes with Apple’s C1X modem, its in-house cellular solution that was first featured in the iPhone Air. Apple claims it is up to twice as fast as the C1 modem found in the iPhone 16e and 30% more energy efficient than the modem in the iPhone 16 Pro. Beyond raw speed, that efficiency gain contributes to what Apple describes as all-day battery life.

Wireless charging sees a more noticeable upgrade, because as it is confirmed that MagSafe returns; supporting up to 15W charging via Qi2, compared to the 7.5W limit on the previous iPhone 16e. The good news is that the addition of MagSafe also opens the door to Apple’s broader ecosystem of magnetic accessories, from wallets to stands and camera add-ons.

OLED display

On the display side, the iPhone 17e retains a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, with peak HDR brightness reaching up to 1200 nits – although it does not have the higher refresh rates seen in the standard and Pro models. The front is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, also used across the rest of the iPhone 17 family, and which Apple says offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation, alongside reduced glare. The chassis is made from aerospace-grade aluminium and carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

48MP camera

Photography continues to revolve around a 48MP Fusion camera system. By default, images are captured at 24MP for a balance of detail and file size, although you can shoot at the full 48MP resolution if you want to. The sensor also enables an optical-quality 2x Telephoto mode via sensor cropping, which effectively give you two focal lengths from a single camera module.

On the video front, the iPhone 17e supports 4K recording in Dolby Vision at up to 60fps. It also captures Spatial Audio and introduces enhanced Audio Mix tools for editing voice and ambient sound.

Sustainability practices

On the sustainability front, Apple edges closer to its “Apple 2030” goal and says the iPhone 17e contains 30% recycled materials, including 85% recycled aluminium in the enclosure and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery. The device is manufactured using 55% renewable electricity across the supply chain, and its packaging is entirely fibre-based.

With 256GB now standard at S$949, the iPhone 17e narrows the gap between Apple’s entry-tier offering and its mainline models. If you have been holding out for a direct upgrade to the iPhone 16e, then MagSafe and current-generation performance parity without stepping up to the higher-priced variants make the iPhone 17e pretty appealing.
