There is nothing like some salty remarks about food in Singapore and Malaysia to get views and reactions for your social media account.
TikToker @edinanana, who appears to be based in Kuala Lumpur, posted a clip lasting just six seconds on Oct 16 with the subtitles: “Final meal in Malaysia before my vacation to Singapore where the food is half as good and four times more expensive.”
The clip was shared on Reddit with the heading, “Even the tourists know”, where it was upvoted 464 times and received 110 comments at press time, while the original post on TikTok garnered 56,800 views, 1,962 reactions and 134 comments.
“Then why come?” asked a TikToker, to which edinanana explained that her fiance’s family lives in Singapore.
Some were more direct. “”Yes, so please don’t come here,” said one Redditor. “Always whining yet still come,” another said.
Several netizens from Singapore explained that food in Malaysia has a lot more salt and sugar, with some warning about the damage to health and the waistline that Malaysian food could cause.
“Isn’t that why the obesity rate in Malaysia is way higher than Singapore? you can’t compare healthier food and food that is unhealthy,” said a Redditor.
“Some of my Malaysian ex-colleagues also say the same thing. It’s not that food in Malaysia is cooked better, they just add a ton more sugar and salt, then complain SG food no taste,” said another.
Yet another said: “I’m not sure if it is half as good , but I’m pretty sure u live longer eating Singapore food though.”
Several netizens questioned her calculation – while they did not disagree that Singapore food is more expensive than in Malaysia’s, they did not think it was four times as much. One Redditor offered this theory: “SG rent too high. I think owners are more focused on being able to pay back the rent than cooking good food.”
While others pointed out that a lot of the food in Singapore is prepared by Malaysians, not all the comments were serious.
“No foreign interference!” demanded a Redditor in jest.
