Singapore should explore the feasibility of collaboration in medical tourism in Tamil Nadu: Minister

Minister for Milk and Dairy Development T. Mano Thangaraj on Sunday said countries such as Singapore should explore the feasibility of collaborating on medical tourism in districts such as Kanniyakumari that have the potential to attract international patients.

Inaugurating a health awareness event, ‘Caring for Your Health’, organised by SingHealth, Singapore’s leading public healthcare institution, in partnership with Glosel, Mr. Thangaraj said: “There is a steady flow of international patients coming to Kerala and parts of Kanniyakumari for medical care. We can think of affordable medical care for patients coming from abroad. There are so many possibilities for us to work together. We are here to help you in whatever way you want.”

“Tamil Nadu has always led the way in public health initiatives. Collaborations like these not only strengthen our healthcare ecosystem but also inspire people to take charge of their health through awareness and early intervention,” he said.

Edgar Pang Tze Chiang, Consul General of the Republic of Singapore said: “Singapore and India have long shared a strong relationship in healthcare and education. Events such as these foster greater professional exchange, research collaboration, and, most importantly, people-to-people engagement that benefits communities on both sides.”

Stressing the need for health and medical collaboration, Mr. Chiang said: “The Tamil Nadu government has been a strong supporter of Singapore initiatives, collaborations and projects in Tamil Nadu. We have exceptionally good relations with Tamil Nadu. These are very, very, strong cultural, political and historical ties. We are quite well invested in many areas in the State. We want to do more with Tamil Nadu. We are also always expanding collaborations in different fields.” he said.

At the event, healthcare professionals and dignitaries from Singapore and Tamil Nadu highlighted the importance of preventive care, community awareness, and holistic well-being. Over 60 doctors representing leading hospitals across Chennai, spanning various specialties including paediatrics, gynaecology, family medicine, internal medicine, and preventive healthcare participated.

Interactive sessions were led by visiting doctors from Singapore’s SingHealth cluster including Dr. Shephali Tagore, Senior Consultant, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital; Dr. Ng Chung Wai, Mark, Senior Consultant, SingHealth Polyclinics; and Adjunct Assistant Professor Dr. Chonkar Sonali Prashant, Senior Staff Physician, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The talks focused on family and women’s health, preventive screening, maternal care, and the evolving role of family physicians in improving community health outcomes.
