AMD makes FSR Upscaling 4.1 available for Radeon RX 6000 GPUs and Ryzen handhelds

If you own an older Radeon GPU, this is good news for you. AMD has brought the newest version of its upscaling technology, FSR Upscaling 4.1, to older Radeon GPUs, alongside a slimmed-down version of FSR 4.1 that will reach AMD-powered handheld PCs and Xbox consoles.

For discrete GPUs, FSR Upscaling 4.1 has made its way to Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards, a few months after it trickled down to the RX 7000 series. AMD also stated that mobile APUs, including those featured in AI Halo PCs and ROG Flow Z13 and Asus TUF A14 laptops, will receive FSR Upscaling 4.1.

As for handheld PCs, AMD is targeting those powered by Ryzen AI 9 and Z2 processors. This includes the ROG Xbox Ally X and X20 handhelds, where Asus has already pushed a preview update with FSR 4.1 support. It’s notable that this version of FSR 4.1 coming to handhelds is half the size of the original INT8 (8-bit integer) model that the discrete GPUs will use, in order to make it more efficient.

Notably, the company also stated that FSR Upscaling 4.1 will be making its way to Xbox Series X|S. It didn’t state when, but in any case, it’s a long overdue addition to Microsoft’s consoles – Sony has already made headway into graphics upscaling with PSSR on the PS5 Pro, and the newly-released QSSR on the base PS5 (both of which were also borne out of collaborations with AMD).
