Epic Games has delayed an unannounced game that would cross over Marvel and Star Wars characters in a shooter, according to Bloomberg. The Fortnite and Unreal Engine maker is now reportedly pushing the game’s developers to use generative AI tools, like Anthropic’s Claude, to complete development. The crossover shooter game was previously slated for March 2027, but is now without a new release date.
“No more hand-written code,” one of the directors on the game told staff, according to Bloomberg. Developers are now pivoting toward an “AI-first” development process, which includes having all art for the game “generated with full AI workflows,” according to the director’s message.
Epic Games communications director Jake Jones told Bloomberg, “We’re embracing AI-accelerated development, led by Epic developers who are the visionaries and creative drivers for everything we do.”
Some Epic developers were reportedly shocked by the AI-first pivot. Shortly before Bloomberg published its story, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said the company has a “huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration” in a statement on X. “The aim isn’t to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal.”
