For a beloved franchise that has spent nearly five decades exploring wars between humans, Gundam: Rogue Orbit is taking a rather different approach. Bandai Namco’s new action game is coming to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on 5 March 2027, but this is not quite the Gundam that long-time fans will be familiar with.
As someone who has always been a fan of Gundam’s Universal Century timeline, I have mixed feelings about that. Personally, I would have liked to see Bandai Namco make a properly story-focused game set in the UC era, so I am a tad disappointed that Rogue Orbit is not it. At the same time, the idea of seeing Gundam move into genuinely unfamiliar territory has intrigued me.

Rogue Orbit takes place in a new timeline and revolves around humanity’s fight for survival against an unknown threat called the Apocalypse. That alone marks the bigget change for Gundam, whose conflicts are usually rooted in human politics, clashing ideologies and the consequences of war rather than a common non-human enemy. In some ways, the game feels like what you’d expect from a Pacfic Rim game, where giant robots fight against kaijus.
