Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will require around 200GB of storage when it launches next year, director Naoki Hamaguchi has warned.
The Square Enix developer talked about the install requirements for the remake trilogy’s long-awaited conclusion during an interview with VGC. When talking about how Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will compare to previous entries in the series, he confirmed that the final chapter of Cloud and Sephiroth’s story will be especially demanding.
“Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game,” Hamaguchi said when asked about additional downloads for physical versions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. “I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.
“One thing I want to say is, even though the game will not be on the full disc, in the position we’re in, because discs may be dying out, or maybe staying, with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, we definitely wanted to deliver some kind of physical product. That was really important to us. Trust me!”
Managing installed games sometimes feels like packing a suitcase for a trip. Stuffing your chosen storage space with the essentials means having to choose what comes with you and what stays home, so when a big game comes along and asks to fill storage space with shiny new graphics and giant worlds to explore, hard decisions have to be made if you don’t want to shell out the cash for more room. Individual install sizes often vary between platforms, but it’s still something players have tried to learn to deal with as games grow increasingly complex.
It’s a debacle Hamaguchi and the rest of the Square Enix team is surely aware of, but that doesn’t mean anyone was willing to compromise the quality of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. In a separate post on X/Twitter, Hamaguchi acknowledged that “a larger file size may not necessarily mean a better game,” but there are other reasons to look forward to its 2027 release date.
