Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki commented on the release window for the PS6
PlayStation fans have been waiting to hear news about a PlayStation 6 release date for some time now. In fact, it’s been six years from when the PS5 released in 2020. In a recent Wall Street Journal profile of Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, the CEO finally made an official comment about a release date for the PS6.
Unfortunately for those waiting for Sony to officially announce a date, Totoki said that Sony has not settled on a fixed date for a PS6 release. In the past, some analysts have predicted that the PS6 could release sometime next year. However, it’s possible that the PS6 may be pushed further out for economic reasons. In fact, both Xbox and Sony have said that they have considered delaying console releases because of the AI-driven memory shortage in an effort to keep console prices down.
With increased demand for compute power from AI companies and their data centers, RAM costs have risen precipitously and RAM has been in short supply. As a result, Xbox and Sony have both raised prices on consoles and accessories within the past two years. It’s possible that, were Sony to release the PS6 in 2027, the price of the console would be prohibitively expensive, especially considering a new PS5 currently sells for around $650, with the Pro selling for around $750.
