Pannir Selvam executed in Singapore following legal process, says Home Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: Pannir Selvam Pranthaman (pic) was executed after undergoing the full legal process under Singaporean law, says the Home Ministry.

“Malaysia’s foreign policy respects the independence and sovereignty of every territory through its policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and the principle of the rule of law,” it said in a parliamentary written reply dated Oct 30.

The ministry was responding to a question from Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor) regarding the case of Pannir Selvam Pranthaman, who was executed in Singapore while investigations into the syndicate that recruited him were still ongoing.

The Home Ministry said the Malaysian government, especially through the police, cooperates with authorities of other nations, including Singapore, in addressing cross-border drug trafficking cases.

“In the case of the late Pannir Selvam, he was convicted of drug trafficking in Singapore and sentenced to death after undergoing the full legal process and being tried in accordance with Singapore’s laws,” it said.

“Earlier this year, the late Pannir Selvam, who had been scheduled to face execution, was granted a stay following efforts and discussions held with his counterpart, the Minister for Home Affairs of Singapore,” it added.
