World of Warcraft Forever Officially Brings Gamepad Controls Blizzard’s MMO


One of the biggest surprises from BlizzCon 2026 was Blizzard’s reveal of World of Warcraft Forever, a new version of the long-running massively multiplayer online role-playing game that will give adventurers a new type of classic experience. While the “Classic Plus” version of World of Warcraft had long been a request from players (and had partially leaked ahead of time), it was the breadth and scope of World of Warcraft Forever that surprised many fans.

Blizzard had another World of Warcraft Forever surprise on the show floor: The MMO is playable on a gamepad, the first time that World of Warcraft has received such robust, official game controller support. Typically, the game is played with a keyboard and mouse — and a series of keybindings for spells and actions. We played World of Warcraft Forever ourselves with a gamepad, and it works surprisingly well.

But don’t count on World of Warcraft Forever coming to consoles or handheld PCs any time soon. That’s not really the goal of gamepad support in Forever, the game’s developers tell Polygon.

“We’ve been thinking about World of Warcraft Forever as a third pillar of World of Warcraft,” said Nora Valletta, lead software engineer on the game. “There’s so much that we’re delivering here, it felt like an opportunity for us to explore all manner of ideas, not just on gameplay front, but also how do players interface with our game?”
