6 women charged with public disorder offences over events mainly linked to Gaza conflict

Tay and Kyal Sin Linn Naing are said to have participated in a public procession without a permit.

The two women and other members in a group are accused of moving from an area near Novena MRT station to the nearby MHA building to deliver letters on June 7, 2024.

The letters opposed the Maintenance of Racial Harmony Bill, which was later passed in Parliament in February 2025.

Among other things, the law empowers the authorities to issue restraining orders against individuals involved in making content that prejudices Singapore’s racial harmony.

According to the police, many people in the group wore shirts that said: “There are no universities left in Gaza.”

The group allegedly later issued a statement to give details of what they had done.

Separately, Nur Sabrina, Nurul Afiqah, Amirah and Dayana are said to have organised a mass kite-flying event held at Marina Barrage to publicise a cause in relation to the Gaza conflict on Oct 27, 2024.

The event was held without a permit, said the police.

Court documents stated that it was held to publicise a cause for children who died in Gaza after Oct 7, 2023.

Nur Sabrina was at the event when she allegedly flashed a lewd hand gesture at a public servant there.

Some of Tay’s alleged offences were in relation to candlelight vigils held near Changi Prison in November 2024 and January 2025.

The vigils were to mark the executions of three convicted drug traffickers – Singaporeans Masoud Rahimi Mehrzad, 35, Syed Suhail Syed Zin, 48, and Rosman Abdullah, 55.

When Tay was later interviewed at Bedok Police Division in January 2025, she allegedly refused to answer questions relating to the vigils.

Police said Tay also allegedly organised a public assembly that same month without a permit in front of a building in the National University of Singapore.

The police spokesperson said: “The group gathered multiple individuals to place shoes and a white burial shroud at the location to demonstrate opposition to the ties between educational institutions in Singapore and Israel.”

In February 2025, Tay was near the State Courts building when she allegedly took part in an assembly publicising a cause that seeks to abolish capital punishment in Singapore.

Five months after the event, Tay was interviewed at the Police Cantonment Complex where she is said to have refused to answer questions.

The six accused were each offered bail of $5,000 on Sept 9. Their cases will be mentioned again in court in October.

Many supporters of the women turned up at the State Courts on Sept 9, with dozens waiting outside the building, including Singapore Democratic Party chairman Paul Tambyah and secretary-general Chee Soon Juan.
