A sun-kissed sports film that rather awkwardly tackles wakesurfing and cyber-shaming in the same breath, Wakesurf Lovers offers a fluffy excuse to gaze at beautiful, muscled torsos – if you can squint past the paper-thin characters, their nebulous motivations and a romance that barely registers.
A well-regarded screenwriter who has worked with Hong Kong film titans such as Stephen Chow Sing-chi, Fung Chih-chiang is notably less reliable as a writer-director of his own films, sometimes fumbling his offbeat, borderline refreshing premises and creating a prevailing sense of tonal whiplash instead.
This pattern continues in Wakesurf Lovers. While it has the potential to be a romantic and inspirational comedy-drama about two loners drawn together by a water sport, the film also demoralises the viewer whenever it mires itself in the toxic realm of internet witch-hunts, depicted here with the most puerile imagery possible.
