The grimy basements of underground punk music and the pristine white walls of contemporary art galleries are usually opposing forces of the creative world, but to Janice Laujan – the screaming, growling frontwoman of Hong Kong cult band David Boring – they are simply different mediums through which she gets to “have a public breakdown”.
“Performance is the only time I can be completely honest about something and project a very intense part of my personality,” says the Hong Kong artist. “It’s saying something very f***ed up publicly, and everyone will just have to watch. There’s something very cathartic about [expressing] this taboo, heavy s*** that no one wants to hear about.”
