EVs may well be the future, but not everyone is ready for them. They are undeniably friendlier to the environment, but they may not suit everyone’s lifestyle – not while infrastructural gaps continue to exist both locally and abroad. Which is why some continue to purchase ICE cars. And if you are in the market for one, the latest A5 from Audi is a tempting proposition.
What’s in a name
This new A5 replaces both the outgoing A4 and A5.

The latest B10 generation A5 is a slightly confusing one because it succeeds both the B9 generation A4 and F5 generation A5. This comes from a time when Audi, in what can only be described as a fit of madness, decided that its gasoline-powered models should get odd-numbered badges, while its electric ones would inherit the even-numbered badges. Model names mean something, and Audi thankfully saw the errors of its ways and scrapped that idea. But the damage was done, so this generation of the A4 and A5 is still called the A5.
Having to succeed both the A4 and A5 means a complicated set of responsibilities. The A5 was always the sportier proposition, while the A4 was more appealing to families. For this generation, the A5 will be available only as a sedan – and in the other markets, it will also come as an estate. Sadly, there will be no coupe or convertible models.
Design and practicality
Aesthetically, the new A5 is more closely related to the old A5 than the A4, and I think that’s a good thing. To my eyes, the A5 was always the more handsome of the two. This new model, with its muscular front fascia, sculpted bonnet, and long slender lines, continues Audi’s tradition of creating handsome compact sedans. The press car, being the pricier Edition 1 variant, means it gets the “S line” exterior and larger 19-inch Audi Sport wheels, which, to my eyes, adds even more attractiveness to an already pretty handsome package.
