Wireless earbuds have picked up all sorts of features over the years, from active noise cancellation to live translation, but Samsung’s Galaxy Buds are now taking on a considerably more serious role. The company’s Hearing Aid feature has received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), allowing selected Galaxy Buds to double as an over-the-counter hearing aid for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.
Rather than requiring a separate app or a trip to the clinic, users of the earbuds can take a five-minute Hearing Test from the Galaxy Buds menu within their phone’s Settings. The test plays a series of tones to each ear before producing an audiogram and classifying the user’s hearing as normal, mild, moderate, severe or profound. Samsung says the test is registered as Software as a Medical Device and can produce results comparable in accuracy to an audiologist’s evaluation.
