Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Makes Big Promise About Switch 2 Version

Nintendo fans have no reason to be concerned about the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, a senior Square Enix official said. The company aims to deliver a port at least on par with the Switch 2 version of its first remake, and noted that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth may even surpass its predecessor in terms of handheld optimization.

The Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade has recently locked down a concrete release date: January 22, 2026. Separately, Square Enix said the rest of the remake trilogy will also make its way to Nintendo’s hybrid console eventually, albeit without sharing any specifics.

FF7 Rebirth May Surpass FF7 Remake in Switch 2 Performance

While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been praised as one of the most graphically impressive games of 2024, it should still translate well to the Switch 2’s hardware, which is modest compared to the current-gen consoles from PlayStation and Xbox. That’s according to longtime Final Fantasy producer Naoki Hamaguchi, who told VGC that Square Enix is “working very hard” to ensure the game runs as well as possible on the hybrid console. “[Switch 2 owners] are going to get a version that is just as satisfying and just as high quality as the first game, if not higher,” the executive said.

FF7 Remake Intergrade Switch 2 Port Is Already Looking Promising

While it has yet to reach Nintendo’s hybrid console, the new port of the first entry in the remake trilogy is already looking promising. Square Enix recently shared a video comparing the visuals of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade Switch 2 version to other platforms, which indicated that the game will at the very least offer a similar level of graphical fidelity during cutscenes. On the performance front, the developer committed to targeting 30 frames per second.

Even if the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth targets similar performance levels as its predecessor, it could still fulfill Hamaguchi’s promise of improvement—for instance, by offering a more stable frame rate. While the likelihood of Square Enix aiming for more than 30fps on the Switch 2 is rather low, it cannot be ruled out entirely. The performance of FF7 Remake Intergrade on the console will likely serve as the clearest indicator of what to expect from Rebirth, given that both titles use the same engine, share many assets, and are developed by the same studio.

[Switch 2 owners] are going to get a version that is just as satisfying and just as high quality as the first game, if not higher.

Square Enix has yet to specify when the second entry in the trilogy will arrive on Nintendo’s latest console. Since the physical Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will be a Game-Key Card release, its sequel is likely to follow suit.
