News that Audi could be discontinuing the RS3 fills me with sadness. Stricter emission regulations mean Audi’s legendary 5-cylinder engine likely won’t be around for much longer. Seeing that this could be my last chance to drive the RS3 and experience that magical inline five, I grabbed it.
Codenamed EA855, that 5-cylinder engine is an enthusiast’s dream because it fulfils the two most basic and important desires: power and noise. 0-100km/h even in stock form around 3.8 seconds, and that number can start with a two if you bend the rules a little. Lightly-tuned examples making over 500hp on the stock turbo are a dime a dozen, while heavily-modified examples making over 1,000hp are well documented.
The 5-cylinder engine in the RS3 makes 395hp from factory.
