30 Best Horror Games To Play In The Dark In 2026

Little Nightmares is already on this list, but when Tarsier Studios and Bandai Namco parted ways, Tarsier didn’t lose a beat, putting out Reanimal in early 2026. You might notice how much it resembles Little Nightmares, and though that’s undeniable, it also does plenty of different things to stand out, making Reanimal a welcome companion to anyone who enjoyed Little Nightmares.

While Little Nightmares captured the sense of a bad dream a child might have, Reanimal is set in a very different world, where monsters tend to be much larger, the world itself feels much more vast, and importantly, it’s all intended for co-op–though you can play solo with a CPU partner if you prefer. It’s hard to imagine someone enjoying Tarsier’s earlier horror games and not also loving Reanimal. Even as some members of the team have moved on (like to work on End of Abyss), there is a signature vibe that Tarsier games provide that imitators just can’t seem to get right.

Though Silent Hill and Resident Evil are usually the first two series players think of when they recall PS2-era horror series that have persisted into the present, Fatal Frame deserves mention, too. Admittedly, I learned this too late myself, but the recent Crimson Butterfly remake is an excellent example of why the series belongs in this conversation.

Crimson Butterfly has an oppressive mood that expertly pairs with its creepy setting. Starring twin sisters who get lost in the woods and stumble upon a village that was said to have disappeared ages ago, the story is purposely head-scratching, with things really only making sense later in the experience, but along the way you’ll fight off ghosts with your Camera Obscura, a special camera that sees spirits. While other horror stories expect you to run from danger, Fatal Frame consistently demands you stare at it, making for a novel approach to horror games.
