Walking Dead fans shouldn’t sleep on Telltale’s fantastic TWD games

In the first season, you’ll play as Lee Everett, and must fight to survive a zombie-addled Georgia while protecting a young girl named Clementine. Unlike other zombie video games, like the Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead series, the focus in Telltale’s The Walking Dead is mainly on narrative and character development, rather than combat. That said, this is a violent and bloody story with upsetting events and themes — after all, we’re still in the Walking Dead universe.

Some parts of Telltale’s The Walking Dead require timed responses, which lead to significant decisions that will shape the story. But rather than having your choices fall on either side of a “good or evil” scale, like in the Mass Effect trilogy, the impact of your choices is often ambiguous or not immediately clear — one character may approve of your decision, while another may not. The tense, choice-driven gameplay and dramatic twists made the series a fast favorite of gaming YouTubers when it first launched, with dozens of creators posting full-series playthroughs showing their reactions to the story in real time.

Where to play Telltale’s The Walking Dead

In 2019, Skybound Games released The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series, a remastered compilation that includes all four seasons, the three Michonne episodes, and more than 10 hours of developer commentary — like a good, old-fashioned DVD box set. It’s available for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One, and retails for $49.99. There aren’t dedicated remasters for current-gen consoles, but the art style of these games still holds up beautifully, even though some episodes are more than a decade old at this point. The individual seasons are available separately on Switch, but unfortunately there isn’t a remaster bundle for Nintendo players.
