App Store developer sales reach $1.4 trillion

Apple shared that the App Store saw over 850 million average weekly users across 175 countries and regions, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s biggest digital marketplaces for developers to reach a global audience.

While physical goods and services accounted for the largest share of transactions across all regions, spending patterns varied by market. Travel emerged as the second-largest category in the US, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil. In China, grocery and food delivery services ranked among the top spending categories, highlighting the App Store’s growing role in local commerce and daily consumer activities.

The AI boom also left its mark on the ecosystem. Apple revealed that more than 40 of the top 100 apps on the App Store last year featured consumer-facing AI capabilities. These apps recorded stronger billing growth than their non-AI counterparts, suggesting that users are increasingly willing to pay for intelligent, personalised experiences.

Developers are also embracing Apple’s expanding suite of AI tools and frameworks. Technologies such as the Foundation Models framework and development tools like Xcode are enabling developers to build smarter applications while preserving user privacy. Health and fitness apps can now offer personalised recommendations using on-device intelligence, while productivity, photo-editing, and video-editing apps are leveraging cloud-based AI models to unlock new capabilities.

Looking ahead, Apple announced plans to open a new Developer Centre in Berlin to support the European developer community. At WWDC 2026, the company is also expected to unveil new APIs, frameworks, and developer tools that will further expand what developers can build across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro.
