ROG Xbox Ally X20: 20th anniversary handheld PC

Take for instance, the screen. For the first time, an Ally handheld now features an OLED display. The new 7.4-inch ROG Nebula HDR panel is slightly larger than the vanilla Xbox Ally X and supports a 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision, FreeSync Premium Pro, and up to 1,400 nits of peak HDR brightness. ASUS is also touting a rapid response time and VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification – it’s a huge step up from the LCD panels found in previous Ally models.

There are also several smaller hardware refinements. The Xbox Ally X20 features TMR joysticks designed to improve durability and reduce drift; while cooling and control elements have been improved based on Ally owners’ feedback.

Under the hood however, ROG has kept things the same – it won’t be using the new Intel Arc G3 chips – for the simple reason of not having to redesign the internal circuitry and thermals. So the Xbox Ally X20 is still powered by AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, paired with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. ASUS is also introducing support for features such as Auto SR upscaling, alongside the Xbox-focused full-screen interface designed to make Windows feel more console-like when navigating games and applications.

Availability and pricing

ASUS has yet to announce pricing or availability, but given that the package combines an upgraded OLED handheld with premium AR glasses, it will almost certainly sit above the price of the current Xbox Ally X.
