Director of One of 2024’s Best Games Says, “Expect the Unexpected” Ahead of Upcoming Reveal

The debut game from developer Sunset Visitor, 1000xResist, took us by surprise in 2024 and gained notoriety for its thought-provoking story and striking art direction. It was born out of a small independent team with a theater background that then turned to games as a creative outlet, and used inspirations such as NieR:Automata and Neon Genesis Evangelion (among other things) in the process. It turns out they’re continuing down that path as the team teased that it’s ready to reveal its next project during the Triple-I Showcase on April 9.

Game director and studio founder Remy Siu couldn’t share many details ahead of the showcase, but did tell us, “We’re really excited to share with everyone what we’ve been working on. We’re always asking ourselves, ‘What can we do that no one else can do?'”

Considering the team’s background in theater, the unconventional design principles of 1000xResist came though and helped it stand out through its character writing, voice performances, and exploration of topics rarely seen in games. And there’s reason to believe they’ll keep up their unorthodox approach to games as Siu also said, “To those who played 1000xResist, you should know by now to expect the unexpected! There will be more than one surprise on April 9th.”

[E]xpect the unexpected! There will be more than one surprise on April 9th.

In my 1000xResist review, I called it “a revolution in storytelling” and praised its deft touch that weaved multiple narrative threads on political action, generational trauma, and interpersonal relationships. Giving it a 9 on our review scale, I concluded, “When all the pieces fall into place, 1000xResist paints a beautifully messy, often cruel, but brutally honest picture of who we are. It’s an invitation to see a deeply personal and mature reflection of the Asian diaspora, dissecting the immigrant experience to show something much greater than simple representation.” It also got an honorable mention from us as one of the best PC games of 2024, was nominated for awards across the games industry, and received a PlayStation and Xbox port the following year.

The Triple-I Initiative has shown high-profile indie games in the past and included announcements such as new content for Vampire Survivors, Katana Zero, and The Alters. When small teams have creative control and room to try new things, you might just find your next favorite thing. As for what “more than one surprise” could mean, we’ll find out more on the showcase next month.
