BYD’s latest charging tech can fully charge a car in under 10 minutes

BYD has introduced a new charging technology that it’s calling Flash Charging. It’s a high-speed charging standard that can deliver up to a whopping 1,500kW of peak charging power. To put this number into perspective, the fastest chargers in Singapore can deliver up to 480kW of charging power.

The Chinese EV giant recently demo-ed this tech using its new Denza Z9 GT, a luxury five-door shooting brake. The car features another new piece of BYD tech: its new Blade 2.0 battery, which is a second-generation lithium-iron phosphate battery.

Together, the Denza Z9 GT can be charged in under 10 minutes. In the demonstration, it got from 10% of charge to 70% in 5 minutes, and then achieved 97% of charge in just 9 minutes and 51 seconds. BYD deliberately limited charging to 97% so that there’s some capacity left for regenerative braking. Crucially, this is about as quick as it takes to fill up an ICE car with petrol.

What’s even more impressive is that the Z9 GT has a 122kWh battery with a claimed range of around 800km. This means it can add around 700km of range in just 10 minutes.

BYD has already built over 4,200 Flash charging stations in China, and plans to have around 20,000 by the end of this year. According to reports, it also wants to build Flash charging stations in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific.
