After the feature was introduced, complaints quickly spread online, with users reporting cases of digital “undressing”. The incident has added to wider concerns among tech watchdogs about the rise of AI-powered “nudify” apps that can be misused to create sexualised images without consent.

Several countries, including France, India and Malaysia, either began probes or called for action in response. The European Commission, which oversees digital regulation in the EU, said on Monday that it was “very seriously looking” into the complaints involving Grok. The AI tool was developed by Musk’s startup xAI and is integrated into his social media platform X.

EU digital affairs spokesman Thomas Regnier criticised the tool, and said: “Grok is now offering a ‘spicy mode’ showing explicit sexual content with some output generated with childlike images. This is not spicy. This is illegal. This is appalling.”

Malaysia-based lawyer Azira Aziz said she was alarmed after learning that a user, believed to be in the Philippines, had prompted Grok to alter her profile photo by asking it to change her “profile picture to a bikini”.

“Innocent and playful use of AI like putting on sunglasses on public figures is fine,” Aziz told AFP. “But gender-based violence weaponising AI against non-consenting women and children must be firmly opposed.”
