Warner Brothers Working on Mortal Kombat 3 Movie

Months before Mortal Kombat 2 arrives in theaters, Warner Bros. and New Line surprised fans by revealing that another film, Mortal Kombat 3, had already been greenlit by the studios. Additionally, Mortal Kombat 2 screenwriter Jeremy Slater told fans at a recent convention that he will return to write the script for Mortal Kombat 3.

Mortal Kombat 2 is the upcoming sequel to the 2021 reboot film Mortal Kombat, and is the fourth film based on NetherRealm Studios’ hit fighting video game franchise. The 2021 Mortal Kombat film was considered a box office success, having grossed over $84 million between theatrical and HBO Max streaming revenue against a budget of $55 million. Some of the Mortal Kombat franchise’s iconic characters will appear in Mortal Kombat 2, with actor Karl Urban joining the cast as Johnny Cage. Several cast members from 2021’s Mortal Kombat will return for Mortal Kombat 2, including Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade and Josh Lawson as Kano.

Mortal Kombat 3 Movie Is Already In The Works

Although Mortal Kombat 2 has been pushed back from its original October 24 release to May 15, 2026, that has not stopped Warner Bros. and New Line from expressing confidence in the series. During a New York Comic Con 2025 panel, Slater shared some good news with attendees. Slater said that both Warner Bros. and New Line were so convinced that Mortal Kombat 2 would have a “giant audience” waiting for its theatrical premiere that it had already started making plans to develop Mortal Kombat 3. Slater also confirmed that WB and New Line wanted him back to write the script for Mortal Kombat 3. As of this writing, no further information about Mortal Kombat 3 has been revealed by Slater or Warner Bros.

However, the news of Mortal Kombat 3‘s announcement came at a bittersweet time for the Mortal Kombat franchise. Longtime Mortal Kombat audio director Dan Forden, known as the voice behind the series’ “Toasty!” catchphrase, left NetherRealm Studios on October 3 after 37 combined years with NetherRealm and its predecessor, Midway Games. Forden appeared to have left NetherRealm amicably and stated that he would use his free time to pursue other personal interests.

Though Mortal Kombat 2 will not launch in October as originally planned, fans will not be left empty-handed this month. The digital editions of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, which includes games like Mortal Kombat Anthologies: Sub-Zero and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, will be available on all major platforms starting October 30. Physical copies of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will be shipped out starting December 12.
