Why Hong Kong artist’s bedroom music-inspired solo exhibition is ‘about self-healing’

Comprising 21 new oil works created in 2025, “Bedroom Paintings” marks Cheng’s fourth solo exhibition with Blindspot Gallery, located in Hong Kong’s Wong Chuk Hang neighbourhood. Cheng says that, like her previous shows, it is “a visual diary about intimacy”, and unlike her older works, is “kind of like a self-healing journal”.

She adds, “This exhibition is in between. My paintings are ultimately depictions of my real-life experiences. As I paint self-portraits but also the things I see outside, I’m projecting my feelings onto the scenery.”

True to the title, which references bedroom music – a style of home-made lo-fi music typically accompanied by emotional and intimate lyrics – the exhibition begins with two paintings of Cheng’s bed titled The Final Puff and Silver Spoon, Baby Quilt, Meows and Back & Forth.
