Grand Theft Auto Online’s Upcoming Mansions Update Is Finally Bringing Back Michael De Santa

Rockstar Games has pulled back the curtain on the next major patch for Grand Theft Auto Online, not only confirming that the free content update will be released on Wednesday, December 10, but also surprising fans with the return of Michael De Santa, one of the three main protagonists from Grand Theft Auto 5. There have long been rumors and theories that Michael would return in a new Grand Theft Auto Online update, and just as players were beginning to lose faith, Rockstar brought back the icon for one last hurrah.

It has now been twelve years since fans got to experience the Grand Theft Auto 5 story, featuring Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. While there were initially plans for single-player DLCs, one of which made it into production and was focused on Trevor becoming an undercover agent for the FIB, Rockstar cancelled them, likely to put its resources into Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Redemption 2. However, Franklin, Trevor, and some other beloved characters did make their return in various new updates for Grand Theft Auto Online, leaving Michael as the odd one out…until now.

Even after two decades, San Andreas has one mission that the rest of the Grand Theft Auto franchise has failed to fully replicate.

New GTA Online Update Will Release December 10

After months of rumors and leaks, Rockstar finally revealed the highly anticipated Mansions update for Grand Theft Auto Online last month. At the time, very few details on the patch were shared, but the studio has now published a new blog post and trailer for ‘A Safehouse in the Hills’. Not only has it now been confirmed that the update will arrive on Wednesday, December 10, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but the brief trailer also left fans shocked as Michael De Santa is officially set to make his return, twelve years after he was last seen in Grand Theft Auto 5.

It’s currently unclear how substantial Michael’s role will be in the upcoming update, but he appears multiple times throughout the recent trailer, suggesting it will be similar to Franklin’s role in GTA Online‘s The Contract update. According to the blog post that accompanied the trailer, ‘A Safehouse in the Hills’ will be a “monumental” update, adding Prix Luxury Real Estate to the game, which will allow players to purchase a new mansion with sprawling outdoor spaces and meticulously designed interiors with a state-of-the-art AI Assistant to aid with professional and personal tasks that maximize players’ potential. Fans can also expect tons of new missions, vehicles, upgrades, and more.

With the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 now less than one year away, fans are eager to know what the future holds for Grand Theft Auto Online. While Rockstar Games has yet to confirm whether progress will be carried over to a successor, if the current iteration will somehow evolve alongside Grand Theft Auto 6, or if a new Grand Theft Auto Online game will launch with entirely new content, forcing players to start over again. Sadly, it’s likely going to be quite some time before fans find out.

When the next installment in the series was first revealed all the way back in 2023, Rockstar Games told fans it was targeting a Fall 2025 release window. Given the studio’s track record, nobody expected that to be the case. Therefore, it was not surprising when the game was delayed to May 26, 2026. But then the real worry began as talks of yet another delay began to circulate online, followed by confirmation from Rockstar that it would indeed be pushing back Grand Theft Auto 6‘s release date once again. The highly anticipated title will now launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. That’s assuming there are no more delays, of course.
