Hollow Knight: Silksong developer Team Cherry has hinted that its next game may not take place in the Hollow Knight universe. The small Australian team has only released two games so far, but both have been massive hits. While fans may already be craving a sequel to Hollow Knight: Silksong, it seems like the developer’s third game may go in a different direction.
There was an eight-year wait between the first Hollow Knight and its sequel, so it could be a while before Team Cherry releases another full game. Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating what a third Hollow Knight game could look like, with players theorizing about both possible themes and gameplay mechanics. If such a game ever does come out, new information from Team Cherry makes it sound like it won’t come anytime soon.
Team Cherry Reveals Why it Took 7 Years to Develop Hollow Knight Silksong
The studio behind the highly anticipated sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong sheds some light on the game’s notoriously long development process.
Team Cherry Says It Wants to Make Games Outside the Hollow Knight Universe
In an interview with Bloomberg, Team Cherry co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen commented that they’d like to go beyond the world of Hollow Knight in future games. While the team is currently working on Silksong DLC, Gibson said the devs “don’t want to be exclusively people that make Hollow Knight.” Neither Gibson nor Pellen offered specifics, but they did say there are other, non-Hollow Knight games they “plan to make.” That makes it seem as if Team Cherry already has ideas for future titles, though the studio has a reputation for being quiet about what it has in store after Silksong‘s long, silent dev cycle.
Gibson also elaborated that the studio’s future games may still have some familiar elements, even if they’re not Hollow Knight titles. More specifically, he said exploring vast worlds and taking on imposing bosses would likely still be part of the core gameplay experience. However, the team would also like to experiment with different themes and genres. The studio isn’t abandoning its core franchise altogether, either. Gibson reiterated that the devs still love the series, and Team Cherry has commented on the possibility of a third Hollow Knight game, saying it could happen but wouldn’t be a true sequel.
Whatever comes down the pipeline for Team Cherry, it has a high bar to meet. The first Hollow Knight has become a modern classic in many fans’ eyes, and Silksong became the highest-rated game of all time for a moment shortly after its release. There will likely be a wait before Team Cherry reveals anything about a new project, but the developer is far from done.
