58% of Game Rant Readers Won’t Be Buying a Steam Machine

Some ten years after the short-lived release of the original Steam Machine by Valve, the company has decided to dip their toes into the world of home consoles once again. With the recent announcement of the next-gen Steam Machine, much discussion has circulated throughout the industry over the potential performance and price of the console, and whether it has enough pull to sway PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo players to make a change.

So, the question begs, can it really stand up in a competitive home console space, and make players defect to a new console? We wanted to know what our readers thought, so we asked if they would be buying a Steam Machine themselves.

With the dust now settling on the announcement, we now have a little more insight into what we can expect from the Steam Machine. For starters, it’s been revealed that potential buyers can expect the console to be priced ‘more like a PC’, and that the gaming system will be more reachable by a larger number of gamers.

Not only that, but details on the console’s power specs have been shared, which are said to be an improvement for over 70% of PC users on Steam. With all this new intel, we decided to ask the Game Rant community their thoughts on the upcoming console release, and whether it is of any interest to them. This is what they had to say.

Will you be buying the Steam Machine next year?

  • Yes, on day one — 19% / 198 votes
  • Yes, but after a price drop — 23% / 241 votes
  • No, I’m happy with my current hardware — 58% / 625 votes

While there is still some time before anyone gets their hands on a Steam Machine, our Ranters are certainly not particularly enthusiastic about Valve’s next console. Granted, nearly half have said they will be buying one, but the majority of this audience aren’t eager enough to grab one from launch. Meanwhile, the most popular answer, with over 58% of votes, indicates that Ranters won’t be putting hands in wallets.

This might be, in part, due to the poor performance of the first Steam Machine model, which was shelved after three years, or a reluctance to venture too far from the familiar. Of course, we’re still not aware of the console’s price as yet, which may influence some prospective buyers. This is a preliminary poll, of course, but the first impressions over the new hardware is mixed. Time will tell whether the Steam Machine can be a true player on the console market, but gamers will need a bit more convincing before they commit.
