How to Get All Keys in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

As soon as you begin to explore the world of Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake, you’ll begin to encounter various doors and chests that seem to be inaccessible. Longtime fans of the series will no doubt know why you are unable to open these items, but new players, and even players of the DQ3 remake, may find it a bit trickier. Like that game, there are various keys found throughout the world that unlock associated doors, but Dragon Quest 2 Remake also features locked chests. In this guide, we’ll show you how to unlock all doors and chests, and how to get all keys in Dragon Quest 2 Remake.

How to Unlock Doors and Chests in Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake

For Every Key, A Color:

In DQ2 Remake, there are three types of locked doors and chests that players will encounter over the course of their journey. Each door and chest is tied to a specific key, each of which is represented by a unique color. The colors, and the keys associated with them, are as follows:

  • Red Doors and Red Wood Chests: Thief’s Key
  • Blue Doors and Blue Chests: Magic Key
  • Silver Doors and Silver Chests: Ultimate Key

The silver chests have something of a green tint to them, which can be confusing. Essentially, any of the chests that look silvery green will be unlocked with the Ultimate Key. All three keys are unlocked over the course of the main story, but it still helps to know exactly when each key will be acquired. This will help avoid hours of aimless wandering, hoping you stumble across that pesky Ultimate Key, only to realize later that you cannot get it until very late in the game.

The three keys are spaced out evenly over the course of the game, with each providing access to a wide range of new locations and items. The description of how to acquire each key will continue below.

The Thief’s Key will be the first key acquired that allows you to gain access to locked doors and chests. This key will allow you to open red doors and unlock Red Wood Chests, which have a very distinct appearance, and are different from the basic red chests that the hero can freely open.

Reach Moonbrooke Castle:

To acquire the Thief’s Key in DQ2 Remake, you’ll need to reach Moonbrooke Castle, and complete the process of recruiting Peronel, the Princess of Moonbrooke to your party. This will occur during the main story, after you’ve successfully recruited Caradoc, the Prince of Cannock to your party. To recruit Peronel, you’ll need to complete the following tasks:

  • When visiting Moonahan, notice the lost dog that follows you when spoken to.
  • Reach Moonbrooke Castle near the center of the map.
  • Make your way to the western edge of the castle grounds, then into the courtyard where the cutscene between Peronel and her father took place. There, you will encounter a flower that appears to have some connection to Peronel. A voice will guide you to the Swamp Shrine east of Moonbrooke.
  • Collect Ra’s Mirror from the Swamp Shrine
  • Return to Moonahan and interact with the lost dog.
  • The dog is revealed to be Peronel.
  • Once Peronel is in the party, return to Moonbrooke Castle. The Chancellor of Moonbrooke will give you the Thief’s Key after revealing himself.
