SINGAPORE – An eldercare home in Tampines Avenue 3, which has been providing shelter for the homeless since 1996, is updating its facilities and training to meet the dementia challenge.

Jamiyah Home for the Aged has added a dedicated space to aid therapy. The Tangerine Room includes items such as old sewing machines and radios to remind residents of their younger years.

The room will also host group activities with memory games, while a calming corner provides residents with a space to seek comfort should they feel anxious or overwhelmed.

The home, which is able to care for up to 200 residents, has dedicated spaces for medical care, physiotherapy and recreation.

A spokesperson for Jamiyah Singapore, which operates the home, said about one in 10 of the 105 current residents has been diagnosed with dementia.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of symptoms dealing with a decline in cognitive abilities, such as memory and problem-solving, affecting more than 57 million people worldwide.

In Singapore, the second Well-being of the Singapore Elderly study by the Institute of Mental Health showed there were about 74,000 persons living with dementia here in 2023 – a figure that is expected to grow to 152,000 by 2030.

Speaking on Nov 7 at the home as it marked its 30th anniversary, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo said its mission is becoming increasingly important as Singapore’s population ages, with one in four residents expected to be aged 65 and older by 2030.
