Possible Love director Lee Chang-dong on class divide and desire in his Oscar-hopeful drama

The film marked the first release in eight years from Lee Chang-dong – the novelist, former politician and filmmaker whose previous work, the 2018 mystery drama Burning, was one of that year’s most critically acclaimed. Given that his preceding film, 2010’s Poetry, arrived another eight years prior, new Lee projects are rare events to be savoured.

One might assume Lee spent the intervening years meticulously crafting Possible Love, given the screenplay’s layered complexity. Summarising it as a tale of two couples – one rich, one poor – barely scratches the surface.
