While clout and trendiness may be the currency of contemporary fashion, Hong Kong costume designer-turned-jewellery artist Vann Kwok chooses to prioritise artistic narrative over social capital or seasonal hype.
Kwok founded Vann Jewellery in 2019 “to create something cool and fashionable, but now, I’m a middle-aged woman”, she quips. “Being cool isn’t essential to me any more; it’s not something I feel compelled to achieve.
“If people find my work cool, thank you – but it’s really a platform for self-expression. Nowadays, I treat my brand more as my way of communicating with the world.”
Kwok, now in her early forties, studied fashion design at Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University, and spent most of her twenties in the local film industry as a costume designer. In 2013, she took a leap of faith and enrolled in the fashion artefact master’s programme at the University of the Arts London. She immensely enjoyed the course’s “super experimental” approach and its strong focus on material, which encouraged her to question the boundaries between art and fashion.
