A LONG-TERM INVESTMENT, AN UNEVEN PRESENT COST

The engineering challenges are substantial. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has described difficult ground conditions and the complexity of working close to existing roads, utilities and operating MRT infrastructure.

Recognising these constraints should also encourage thoughtfulness about what affected communities must bear.

The timescale of infrastructure planning is different from that of everyday life. While an extended construction period may represent a small fraction of a transport corridor’s lifespan, it may occupy a substantial part of a child’s school life, an older resident’s retirement or a small business’s operating history.
