Every fortnight in Walthamstow, East London, a sign with a hand-painted goldfish pointing towards a kitchen window appears on the side of a residential building: “Lucky Yu Bakery pick up”.
There is no shopfront, set opening hours or seating; yet queues regularly spill down the street from her house. Customers pre-order online or turn up on the day, collecting their bakes through the window of Leung’s kitchen.
“Starting Lucky Yu was like a ‘Swiss cheese effect’ where all the holes magically align,” Leung laughs. “Normally [the phrase is] used to describe something when bad things happen, but in this case it’s something really good.”
